Fortune Telling Table
San Francisco, 1968
This fortune telling table is in the form of a Ouija or spirit board, with letters and numbers on its circumference. Artist unknown.
Limbs shaky, I shoved harder on the door.
Nothing happened. I whimpered, the sound freezing in my throat. Had the cold already drained the strength from my muscles? I couldnât even open a simple door. This was where it began. Cold. Numbness. And then death.
Outside the glass, the attendant frowned. She grasped the handle and pulled. The door didnât move.
Marla grabbed it with two hands, leaning back. Desperate, I threw myself against the glass. It refused to yield. The attendant tugged again, her expression frantic. I angled my shoulder toward the doorâs wooden frame and slammed into it as hard as I could.
A violent tremor ran up my shoulder and into my jaw. The door popped open. I staggered past Marla and against the tile wall. She tumbled to the floor. Mist billowed from the chamber.
She pushed the door closed with one foot and laughed weakly. âSorry about that. It sticks sometimes. I think the frameâs a little crooked.â
A little? I sank beside her. The tiles were warm, and they felt amazing.
And suddenly, I felt amazing. I was alive, and life was incredible. Blood pumped through my limbs. Warm air filled my lungs. It was all I needed. I wanted to roll around on the floor and just soak in the heat.
She pulled an electronic thermometer from the pocket of her white lab coat and aimed it at my head. BEEP. âYour temperatureâs dropped by sixty-one degrees Fahrenheit. Impressive. How do you feel?â
I laughed. âFantastic.â My blood was humming, adrenaline pumping and fizzing in my veins. It was better than my first kiss. It was better than my first trip to Paris. It was better than swimming with dolphins.
Okay, Iâve never actually swam with dolphins. But I imagined it was better than that.
She clambered to her feet. âYou can get dressed. Iâll let Frank know youâre finished here.â
âThanks.â I trotted to the locker room and slowly changed back into my normal clothing. It all seemed too hot now, and I slung my Paranormal Museum hoodie over my shoulder.
When I finally emerged into the blue and white waiting area, Frank was there. âHow was it?â he asked.
âI donât know if I could force myself to do it again, but it exceeded expectations.â I grinned, and he chuckled in response.
âOh, youâll be back,â he said. âWant to see the cryonics facility now?â
I did. Why had I ever been suspicious of the man? He was changing lives. And he obviously hadnât killed anyone. He hadnât tried to kill me. His utter lack of homicidal intent left me feeling warm and fuzzy. No pun intended. I bit back a giggle.
Frank led me through a series of doors and hallways to the opposite side of the building. He pulled white jumpsuits from a tall, blond-wood cabinet and handed me one. âThis is a sterile facility. We already have eight patients.
